šŸ F1 2026 CHEAT SHEET šŸ

New to Formula 1? Or just need a quick refresher before lights out? We got you.

The 2026 F1 season is bringing a new era of regulations, new teams on the grid, and the fastest racing on the planet. Whether you're watching your first race or your hundredth, this cheat sheet covers the basics so you can follow along like a pro.

Inside you'll find:

  • Teams on the grid

  • Drivers to know

  • Car specs & speed

  • Race weekend format

Whether you're watching Drive to Survive, joining us at a DCMC watch party, or just getting into the sport, this will get you race-ready.

Save this post so you have it on race day or access it in our blog.

And send it to the friend who still asks:

ā€œWait… what’s qualifying?ā€ šŸ˜…

See you at the watch parties.

2026 New Regulations Outline

Smaller Cars & Lighter CarsĀ

Cars are more compact to improve racing.

  • Wheelbase reduced by 200mm (3600mm → 3400mm)

    • Narrower chassis and floor

    • Front tires 25mm narrower / rear tires 30mm narrower

  • Minimum weight drops from 800kg (2025) → 768kg.

    • The removal of the MGU-H hybrid component contributes to the reduction.

Smaller cars create more room for wheel-to-wheel racing, though narrower tires slightly reduce grip.

New Aerodynamics

Ground-effect Venturi tunnels are removed, reducing reliance on underfloor downforce.

  • Changes include:

    • Simplified front & rear wings

    • Larger diffuser for floor performance

    • Wheel covers removed

    • New bargeboards to manage airflow

The goal is cleaner air and closer racing. The intent is to reduce outwash (the practice of pushing that turbulent air away from the car) often disturbing the car behind and improve the ability for cars to follow each other.

New Hybrid Power Units

F1 keeps the V6 turbo hybrid, but power delivery changes significantly.Ā

  • 50/50 splitĀ between combustion and electric power

    • Internal Combustion Engine (ICE)Ā power reduced to ~400kW

    • MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit – Kinetic) output increases from 120kW → 350kW

    • replacing the MGU-H, a complex and heavy motor

  • Advanced Sustainable Fuel: These fuels are created from non-fossil sustainable sources and act as drop-in replacements without modifying engines.

  • Recharge:Ā Battery harvesting more than doubles to 8MJ per lap

    • Energy can be harvested:

      • under braking

      • on partial throttle

      • through ā€œsuper clippingā€ (MGU-K reversing at full throttle at the end of straights)

      • when drivers lift off before braking.

Overtake Mode replaced RS (the DRS - Drag Reduction System)

  • Drivers can deploy +0.5MJ of extra electrical energy when within 1 second of the car ahead at a detection point so they can sustain a higher speed for a longer period.

  • There is one detection point per lap for this mode: expected to be out of the final corner on many occasions, leading onto a long straight.Ā

Straight Mode (or Active Aero)

A new drag-reduction system used every lap in dry conditions.

  • Rear wing opens

  • Front wing elements also adjust

  • In low-grip conditions, shorter zones may activate where only the front wing adjusts.

This reduces drag and improves straight-line speed.

Boost Button

Drivers now have a manual energy deployment option.

  • The Boost button can be used offensively or defensively anywhere on track to gain speed.

Start Procedure Update

  • Drivers now receive a 5-second warning before the start lights.

  • This gives time to build engine revs since the MGU-H (which previously spooled the turbo) has been removed, so it needs the exhaust gasses from the ICE to do so.

Qualifying adjustments

Still a three-stage knockout format:

  • Ā Q1 :18-min session ( slowest 6 drivers eliminated )

  • Ā Q2 :15-min session ( slowest 6 drivers eliminated )

  • Ā Q3 : 13-min session ( decides the top 10, including pole )

Higher Budget Caps

To support the new regulations:

  • Team Cost Cap: $135M → $215M

  • Power Unit Cost Cap: $95M → $130M
